Instead it was penned in the canyons for some months, while the Han used psychological gambits to reduce Chu morale. Among these was the tactic of forcing captured Chu soldiers to sing songs about their homes within earshot of the trapped army, making the Chu think that their nation had been conquered. This resulted in mass desertion.

Eventually, less than a thousand Chu remained with their general. The force was far more mobile than the host that had entered the canyons, making a breakout possible. Despite heavy losses, a small force did succeed in getting out of the trap. They were chased down by Han cavalry.

Xiang Yu committed suicide. His loss, as much as that of his army, crippled the Chu war effort. No other leaders of his calibre were available, and the war thereafter became a string of defeats for the Chu. The Han were able to achieve dominance over the regions originally unified by the Qin, and became the ruling dynasty of China.
